Luke 10:2, Mark 10:27, John 10:10, I
Timothy 2:3-6 The Colosseum: The beacon of Rome, what everyone “must see”, and of course, that notorious place of barbarianism and martyrdom. Construction of this magnificent piece began in AD 72, and in AD 80, an inauguration of the amphitheater lasting 100 days saw the slaughter of five thousand wild animals! Perhaps it is our macabre nature to desire to see where hundreds of humans and thousands of animals were cruelly killed for the pleasure of the ancient Romans, but the Colosseum remains an unmovable artifact of bygone times, and the source of national pride. As the Ancient gladiators themselves fought hard for personal glory and freedom from their bondage, so the modern Romans strive to find peace and freedom from the traditions of their society and the rejection of Christianity. Ps. 108:5, Eph. 6:10-12, 1 Pet. 5:8, 2 cor 2:14 Across the street we see the Domus Aurea, or “Golden House”, the replacement palace for the infamous Emperor Nero (his first burnt down). All the features of this palace reflect attributes of the sun, with which the emperor identified himself. Pray that The Son, Jesus Christ would shed His holy light on the city of Rome, removing doubt in the hearts of men of who He truly is! Ps 67:1-2 The Roman Forum: Here in ancient times was a busy, bustling marketplace and great meeting ground for politicians and other freemen. It was at the Roman Forum where the exchange of ideas and opinions took place, as well as acts of the Senate and governmental operations. Now it is a jumble of marble ruins open to everyone. It was near here that the Apostle Paul was imprisoned. Today’s Romans love to exchange ideas and are apt to hearty and sometimes heated discussions of all matters. Talking about spiritual matters is welcome, although it is a common belief that “whatever works for you is great for you, but I don’t care anything about changing my own ideas about religion”. Ask God to stir the hearts of the Romans to think deeply of their own spiritual states, and to seek the Truth. Pray that the power of the Holy Spirit would encourage people to look to the Bible for the answers they are looking for! Acts 17:11, 2 Samuel 22:31, Hebrews 4:12 Fontana Di Trevi: The Fountain of Triton, legend has it that when a visitor to Rome throws a coin over the shoulder into this beloved landmark, he is destined to return, two coins and he will fall in love with a Roman, three coins and the bliss of marrying a Roman! The fountain depicts the sea, representing not only the god of the oceans, Triton, but the ocean’s many moods- complete with foaming water. The water in the Fontana di Trevi is brought into the heart of Rome through ancient aqueducts, delivering pure drinking water for the weary traveler. Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life!” Pray asking God to cause the thirsty in Rome to look to Him for the water of life. Proverbs 25:21, Revelation 7:17 Trastevere: The trendy and ancient quarter of Rome, home to many students as well as ex-pats, Trastevere is quite popular to visit, as it is probably one of the best representations of Roman culture, both old and new. The sidewalk cafés and pizzerias boast some of the best of Roman cuisine. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets for a little while before stopping at a bar under an ivy-laced canopy to enjoy an Italian caffe or gelato- buonissimo! The Romans love to eat, drink and be merry, but these worldly delights cannot compare to the joy and contentment of being in fellowship with God. Pray that the Romans would hunger for their God. 1 John 1:3-4, Acts 8:8 Spanish Steps: Not noted for being more than a grand meeting place, the Spanish Steps sees thousands of visitors and Romans every day. It’s named for being next door to the Spanish Embassy but every holiday is adorned with beautiful seasonal flowers. The Spanish Steps are a place for the weary to rest and people watch, and to meet new and old friends. Pray that God will help the Romans to realize their need for repentance of sins and that they will meet with the truest Friend, Jesus! Galatians 1:4, 2 Peter 2:9 Vatican City: Wanting to demonstrate the power of the Holy See, Pope Julius II had the largest church in Christendom built in 1506. It took a hundred and fifty years to complete St. Peter’s Cathedral. Millions make pilgrimages and sightseeing trips to this imposing structure every year. As well as being the seat of the Catholic Church and home of the pope, this is the world’s smallest independent country. Even some of the automatic teller machines have Latin as a language option! Wouldn’t it be amazing to see the actual Holy Spirit fill the Catholic Church with its fire? Pray that God will pour out His Spirit upon this place and remove all deceit and false teachings from the most powerful and political branches of Christianity. Ask for a revival like man has never seen or experience ever before! Zechariah 10:2, Acts 4:12, II Timothy 4:3-4, II Peter 2:1-2 Our last stop on today’s tour is at the Pantheon. The best preserved of all classical Roman buildings, this one dates to 25 BC! Originally at pagan temple, it was converted to a catholic church in AD 609 and thus well protected by the Holy See. A true archeological and historical treasure, this is more than likely one of the spots where the Apostle Paul would have come to meet and preach to the Romans. Team Rome currently has 5 missionaries working daily to further God’s kingdom in Rome. Pray earnestly that just like Paul, these missionaries would be able to do exactly what God commands so that we can see an explosion of new believers taking hold of the Lord’s vision for a church planting movement, and that this movement will begin soon. Pray for the small existing Christian church, that it would be strengthened in faith and duty, and that they will boldly proclaim the Gospel to all of Rome.
